Buzzard

The Buzzard – a formidable presence with a seemingly lonely heart.
This sculpture holds the energy of wide, soaring wings and a sharp, searching eye. It was born from a moment of quiet encounter — watching a buzzard land close, startled at seeing me yet steadfast, its size, wildness, and raw grace impossible to ignore.
The form stands grounded — wings folded, legs steady. It carries the feeling of watchfulness, solitude, and the soft ache of its melancholic call.
Each line was shaped to honour the bird’s resourcefulness, its patience, and its place in the wild.
Carved in rugged Lazonby sandstone, its surface echoes earth and grit. It’s made to stand proud — on stony ground, or at the edge of trees, becoming part of its surroundings, not apart from them.
This piece is for the one who needs a reminder to return to their own wildness.
To stand alone, strong, and wholly themselves — no performance, just presence.

I hear Buzzards calling, and see them flying over the workshop regularly. They nest in Birk Wood on Gallows Hill which rises to the south of my studio. Often there are three or four flying together, slowly circling until suddenly dipping and changing direction to avoid the baiting Crows.
They’re wonderful to watch. One time a Buzzard landed some hundred or so yards from me, in the adjacent meadow – it was a big bird, even at that distance and so proud looking – magestically wild and thrilling.
