Hare with a brown back

Hare stone sculpture

Hare with a brown back –  animal garden sculpture in Yorkstone – 9 1/2″ x 8″ x 12″

Sitting Hare stone sculpture for the garden.  This Hare has a quiet disposition. The look is soft mannered, with front paws neatly in front and the head in a sideways gaze, ears low.

The carving of the piece is worked around the beautiful natural markings within the sandstone.  These colours are highlighted on the back and tail, and give the name ‘Hare with a brown back’ to this sculpture.

The sandstone is quarried in Yorkshire and is known for its durability, beautiful fine-grain and honey-coloured hues

Although I see Hares locally in the fields, I’ve only twice seen one close at my workshop.  It is quite breathtaking to see the whiskers twitch and the shine in the eye.  On one occasion the Hare stood stock still, it had spotted me, and in the blink of my eye had vanished.

The second time I watched for a while, the Hare unaware I was there.  It was as if the Hare was exploring.  It sat and raised its head towards the Meadowsweet growing at the side of the stream.  Movement was deliberate, steps forward slowly, nibbling the grass and stretching as it went.

I love these moments of seeing a quiet wild animal.  The Hare’s behaviour natural, uninterrupted – it gives me time to absorb the essence and purity of ‘Hareness’ which feeds into my sculpture carving.

Especially with Hare sculptures I believe it is important to capture some of the beauty of the animal, but that this is conveyed calmly.

My thought for this sculpture is that it will sit reposeful within a garden and bring something of the connection with nature that I experienced when Hares visited me.
