Birds in the Ancient World
Isn’t it just a wonderful thing when you get engrossed and ‘lost’ in a book?
At the moment I’m completely absorbed by Birds in the Ancient World – Winged Words – by Jeremy Mynott which explores the Greek and Roman worlds over a thousand years through their relationship with birds, from medicine to mythology, poetry to pottery, farming to folklore.
The illustrations are beautiful and so greatly inspiring – and every page brings captivating new knowledge. There’s a lot of learning in it for me, connections and understanding of things ‘bird’, and magical facts. I’ve secreted myself away with these pages, and possessively hold, harvest and consume this treasure of a book. Is it wrong to feel so over-protective of a paperback?

Ah, Jennifer, a book from my corner of the country, and one already on my wish-list. Our local RSPB put on a talk by the author some months back, sadly on a night when we couldn’t be there. But as a classicist and bird lover, I am so looking forward to this volume. I am currently reading the books I have in my ‘to read’ pile, but once that goes down, I shall treat myself!
Yes! Did you read Birdscapes? I too have such a big to read pile, and it never seems to get smaller! Though I try. I’m loving this book.
No, Jennifer, I hadn’t read Birdscapes, and having checked it out, it will also be added to my list. Thank you for the tip.
Didn’t mean to add more to your ‘to read’ pile – I’m hoping to get a copy soon.
