Little Bird with ivy

Little bird sculpture

I’m quite a fan of ivy, I know not everyone’s favourite, but there are so many benefits to wildlife in having thick clumps of it, as ground-cover or clambering its way up walls, buildings or trees, that I allow it pretty much free ramble.

The ivy in the garden is providing wonderful, and essential cover for little birds just now, enabling them to forage and feed despite the snow and ice.  It also provides good shelter for roosting bats, and later in the year for nesting birds.  Other ecological benefits are pollen for bees and butterflies and many other insects and the berries are always welcome food for birds.

Here is a Little Bird sculpture, alongside a token sprig of ivy with its beautiful florets.

The little wren-like bird is carved in sandstone and a small 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ x 3″ in size.
