Peewit
Peewit carved in Yorkstone – 10″ x 4″ x 6″
The Northern Lapwing is also known as the Peewit, or pewit, tuit or tew-it, Green Plover, or just Lapwing in Britain. The name Peewit comes from the word sounding like the bird’s characteristic call.
Lapwings begin to arrive here on the North York Moors in March and signal their presence with frequent calls and a ‘lapping’ sound made from their wings in flight, and in their tumbling displays.
