The Season of the Growing Sun

three eggs in the hedgerow

Of all the many theories surrounding the origins of Easter I like the Norse eostur, eastur, or ostara which meant ‘the season of the growing sun’, or ‘the season of new birth’.  Our word East comes from the same source.  Easter is the changing of the season.

Green shoots showing in the hedgerow

On that basis it is feeling very much like Easter here.  I found a small nest containing three eggs half-hidden and sheltered in the bottom of the hedgerow.  The hedgerow itself is sprouting and greening – spring-green-growth.  It drives an urge to get out and plant and nurture the newly surfacing shoots.
