Only Girls Allowed

Anne Seymour Damer sculpting Apollo

The sculptor Anne Seymour Damer at work – via

Only Girls Allowed is the title of an exhibition at the Wensleydale Galleries starting in March – to celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday March 8th, 2014.

I’m very pleased to say that I will be showing sculpture at the gallery for this exhibition, and am just starting a figure carving – a female form, specially for the show.  I haven’t carved a figure for ages, and am really enjoying getting into those wonderful female curves.

As the exhibition is to mark International Women’s Day I’m also thinking about the many incredible female stone carvers who have gone before me, and this little caricature of the British sculptor Anne Seymour Damer (1749 – 1828) makes me smile.  There she is, seated, in all her finery,  vigourously chiseling away at Apollo’s bottom!

Do pop the dates in your diary for the exhibition:

Only Girls Allowed – Preview evening Friday, March 7th, 2014 at 7 pm, then the exhibition will run for a month.
